The ECM-680S is an MS stereo shotgun , electret condenser microphone (25 cm), ideal for a broad range of field production and broadcast studio applications. Incorporating newly developed microphone capsules, the ECM-680S offers excellent sensitivity, low inherent noise, and a flat-and-wide frequency response. The most distinguished feature of the ECM-680S is its switchable operation between a highly directional monaural mode and stereo mode.
 
Monaural mode provides highly directional sound pickup, while stereo mode delivers natural and spatial sound. The MS microphone signal of the ECM-680S is internally decoded and it provides L and R (stereo) outputs. The ECM-680S is supplied with a XLR-5-pin to XLR-5 pin cable for use with 5-pin XLR input equipped camcorders. The Sony ECM 88BC is a miniature condenser, lavalier microphone with a 4-pin Hirose connection. The 4-pin connector enables use with Sony WRT-822B and WRT-8B bodypack transmitters. The capsule is 3.5 x 3.5 x 16.8mm, allowing natural-looking concealment on stage or camera. The electret condenser element uses a dual-diaphragm mechanism, resulting in high sensitivity.
