Stagebug SB-1 Active Acoustic DI
RAD-R800 0110 00
* Active direct box for acoustic guitar
* Ultra compact to fit in your guitar case
* Plug & play easy to use feature set
* 48V phantom powered, no batteries needed!

The Radial SB-1 Acoustic is a high-performance active direct box made for players that are on the move. Made to fit inside a guitar case, the SB-1 is the smallest Radial DI box ever! But don't let the small size deter... this ultra-compact StageBug sounds absolutely terrific!

The design begins with standard ¼ instrument input with a thru-put to feed your tuner or your on-stage amp. The ultra-quiet active circuit at once converts the signal from high to low impedance to reduce susceptibility to noise. The signal is then buffered and balanced for long cable runs to the PA system. 48 volt phantom provides the power, so the SB-1 does not require batteries or external supply to make it work. You simply plug in and you are ready to go!

The active circuit features a carefully selected 800k-ohm input impedance to eliminate problems with loading while delivering a crisp, clear sound to the audio system. This delivers extra sparkle to the top end when interfacing vintage guitars with low output pickups and is particularly handy should you plan to use it for recording or Reamping. The SB-1 is also equipped with a -15dB pad that reduces the input sensitivity to gracefully handle even the loudest active instruments. This makes the SB-1 perfectly well suited for electric bass and keyboards. To reduce feedback, toggling the 180° polarity switch helps eliminate hot spots on stage that can cause low frequency resonance.

Stagebug SB-4 Piezo DI
RAD-R800 0140 00
* Active DI optimized for piezo transducers
* Smoothes out peaks, eliminates squawk
* High pass filter eliminates resonance
* Ultra compact to fit in your guitar case

The Radial StageBug SB-4 is a compact active direct box that has been optimized for use with piezo transducers. This enables violin, dobro, mandolin, cello, upright bass and other instruments that are best amplified using a piezo to be connected without compromising the tone or frequency response.
The design begins with a ¼" input for the instrument pickup. Unlike typical direct boxes that have a 1meg-ohm input impedance, the SB-4 features a very high 10meg-ohm impedance that smoothes out troublesome peaks that give piezos a bad name.
The higher impedance also broadens the frequency response for a more natural and pleasing sound. The active circuit performs the high-to-low impedance conversion and balances the signal to enable long runs upwards to 100 meters without loss, delivering spectacular linearity and low distortion throughout the audio range.
To help eliminate feedback on stage, the SB-4 is equipped with a high-pass filter and 180° polarity reverse switch. The high pass filter eliminates excessive bottom end which in turn reduces resonance that can cause the top of the instrument to vibrate.
The 180° polarity reverse helps reduce acoustic hot spots on stage by changing the phase relationship between the PA system and room acoustics which can combine at certain frequencies to create peaks.
Reversing the polarity eliminates the acoustic peak without resorting to severe equalization which only serves to compromise the natural tone of the instrument.
Connections include an AUX out for a stage amplifier plus a standard XLR output to feed the PA. Power is derived from the console's 48V phantom, thus eliminating the need for batteries or external supply. One simply connects, turns on the phantom power and plays!
These features combined with the compact size make the StageBug SB-4 the perfect companion for orchestral artists, blue grass players and pop string quartets that need to turn it up when in concert.

PZ-DI Orchestral Instrument DI
RAD-R800 3005 00
* Optimized for orchestral instruments on a live stage
* Adjustable load for piezo and magnetic pickups
* Variable low-cut filter to control bass resonance
* 48V phantom powered, does not require batteries

The Radial PZ-DI™ is a unique direct box that is specifically designed for acoustic and orchestral instruments. Unlike most direct boxes that are limited to a 'one size fits all' design, the PZ-DI lets you properly match the input impedance to the source to optimize the frequency response, dynamics and feel so that no matter what type of pickup you employ, you will enjoy smoother, more musically pleasing results.
The design begins with a 3-position load adjustment switch: The 1 meg-ohm position delivers the classic impedance found on most active DI boxes. The 220k-ohm setting warms up the tone of a magnetic pickup to give you the feel and tone as if connected to a tube amplifier. The ultra-high 10 meg-ohm impedance is used to compensate for the harsh, squawky tone that usually plagues piezo-equipped instruments. This is followed by a fully variable high-pass filter that lets you 'size the instrument' by gently rolling off bass frequencies to eliminate unwanted resonance. You could for instance, retain the low frequencies on a cello or increase the cut-off point to better suit a violin. For active instruments such as acoustic guitars that incorporate a battery powered preamp, you can engage a low-pass filter to gently soften the hard edge for a smoother more natural tone.
To maximize signal handling and reduce distortion, the PZ-DI incorporates an innovative DC to DC switching supply that converts the phantom power to deliver extra headroom. This provides ample dynamic range for acoustic instruments. Should an extra loud source such as an active bass or digital keyboard be encountered, simply activate the -15dB pad to satisfy the situation. Other problem solvers include a 180° polarity reverse switch to tame hot spots on stage that can cause feedback and a ground lift switch to help eliminate hum and buzz caused by ground loops.
The Radial PZ-DI is a ground breaking direct box that can instantly adapt to all types of pickups so that you can enjoy the full frequency response and dynamics of an orchestral string instrument, smooth-out the peaks of bluegrass fiddle, banjo or mandolin, split off a bass guitar without excessive loading, or naturally amplify an acoustic guitar without the usual tone-altering effects.

"With the PZDI, we were able to integrate multiple piezoelectric devices seamlessly and with glorious results. Radial has once again proven they are a cut above the rest."

J48 Phantom Powered Active Direct Box
RAD-R800 3001 00
* Ultra low distortion of all types
* Exceptional headroom & dynamic range
* Retains instrument's natural sound
* Powered by 48V phantom

The Radial J48 has been designed from the ground up to deliver the most natural tone. As a direct box manufacturer, we do not believe it is our task to alter the sound of your prized '1962 Fender Jazz Bass', but retain and transfer the true character of the instrument to the mixing console without adding distortion or introducing artifact. This design philosophy has gained a tremendous following from many of the world's most demanding musicians.
Using only 48V phantom power, the Radial J48 is an active direct box that produces an exceptionally linear response that extends from 20Hz up to well above 40kHz. Low distortion of all types is achieved via a unique digital switching power supply that raises the internal operating rail voltage for added headroom and improved signal handling. The results are truly amazing. The J48 delivers an ideal even-order harmonic cascade and a sonic performance that outperforms DIs costing several hundreds more.
And like all Radial products, the J48 is both feature-rich for studio and made tough to handle the road. This includes a -15dB input pad to tame extra loud signals, 180º polarity reverse for feedback control on stage and a ground lift to help reduce hum & buzz caused by ground loops. Special features include a merge function that elegantly mixes left-right signals to mono without phase cancellation. To minimize resonant feedback with acoustic instruments, the J48 is also equipped with an 80Hz high-pass filter (low-cut). When engaged, this also increases headroom by eliminating unneeded bass frequencies.
Radial's innovative book-end design protects switches and connectors from abuse while the internal I-beam construction eliminates stress on the PC board. This serves to reduce solder joints from going 'cold' and delivers trouble-free performance for years. A full-bottom no-slip pad provides mechanical and electrical isolation while providing plenty of 'stay-put' for rockin' stages!
The Radial J48 is used by artists as diverse as acoustic guitarist Tommy Emmanuel; super-star engineer Joe Chiccarelli; and one of the most successful bands of all time Fleetwood Mac. The Radial J48… the world's finest 48V phantom powered active direct box.

J48 STEREO Phantom Powered Active Direct Box
RAD-R800 3002 00
The Radial J48 Stereo is a high performance active direct box designed for professional touring and studio recording. It features the same award-winning signal path that has made the single channel J48 the most specified active direct box on tour today. And with users as diverse as Paul McCartney, Tommy Emmanuel and Joe Chiccarelli, you can be sure it will meet the most demanding qualifications.

The design begins with a rugged 14 gauge steel construction and a bookend design that protects sensitive switches and connectors from damage. The internal I-beam construction ensures the fragile internal PC board will not torque, which in turn could lead to cold solder joints developing and premature failure. All connectors are made from glass-filled nylon and feature extra large nickel-silver contacts that will not tarnish over time.

Inside, a unique switching power supply converts the 48 volt phantom to AC, increasing the headroom for improved signal handling and lower distortion. This results in an exceptionally linear frequency response that spans from 10Hz to 40kHz while being able to handle high output instruments without choking. In addition, a -15dB pad may be engaged for extreme signal handling. This is supplemented with a high-pass filter that gently rolls off low frequencies below 80Hz to clean up mud and excessive resonance. A side-access 180º polarity reverse aids when using the J48 Stereo with dual element pickups to either phase align the sources or eliminate acoustic hot spots that can cause feedback on stage.

A unique aspect of the power supply is the way that the J48 handles buzz and hum caused by ground loops. The traditional solution is to lift the audio ground by disconnecting pin-1 at the XLR output. When this is done, the 48 volt phantom power from the console is shut off, forcing one to introduce a battery into the equation. Unfortunately, batteries are inconsistent, and when they begin to drop power, severely affect the available voltage and resulting headroom. Instead, the J48 employs a DC to DC converter with a high frequency transformer that enables the audio ground to be lifted at the power supply. This does not shut off the phantom power and is invisible to the user.

The Radial J48 Stereo – Twice as good as the world's finest phantom-powered active DI!

- Ultra low distortion of all types
- Exceptional headroom & dynamic range

JDX-48 Reactor Guitar Amp Direct Box
RAD-R800 1402 00
* Captures sound of both the head and the cabinet
* Delivers consistent tone - show after show
* Works equally well on electric guitar and bass
* Can be used with 48V phantom power or DC supply

The Radial JDX 48 Reactor is a direct box designed to capture the explosive dynamics and warmth of an electric guitar amplifier by connecting between the guitar amp head and speaker cabinet. This delivers a sound that is similar to a well-placed microphone while eliminating the frustrating inconsistencies.
The design begins with 100% discrete class-A circuitry and a transformer-coupled 'reactive load' that captures both the sound from the amp head along with the back electromagnetic impulse from the loudspeaker. This produces a more realistic rendering than the usual resistive pad offered by other manufacturers. The signal is then processed via a carefully designed multi-stage filter to emulate the tone of a 4x12 half stack cabinet.
In use, the JDX 48 delivers greater consistency over a typical microphone as irregularities such as mic placement and varying acoustics no longer play the dominant role on stage. This is most appreciated when using in-ear monitors as the tone remains consistent from one show to the next, resulting in shorter setup times and a more comfortable audio feed for the artist.
Although originally designed for guitar, the JDX has also become a favorite on bass. The clarity and punch in the lower midrange delivers a tone that is reminiscent of an Ampeg SVT connected to an 8x10 cabinet. On guitar it sounds as if you have a Shure SM57 in front of a Marshall half-stack. This new version also offers greater power handling for 300 watt amps and extended low end for deep bass frequencies.
The JDX 48 Reactor… the most natural sounding amp DI ever!

"The JDX gave me all the character and distortion without the worries of bleed and feedback. I was so surprised how close it sounded to the SM57, I had to double-check the patch."

JDX Direct Drive Amp Simulator and DI Box
RAD-R800 1404 00
Guitar amp simulator for pedalboards
Eliminates need to bring an amp to the gig
4 x 12, half-stack & open back combo tone

The Radial™ JDX Direct-Drive is a unique and powerful device that simulates the sound of a guitar amplifier while doubling as a direct box. Unlike a typical direct box that merely transfers the sound of the pedals to the PA, the Direct-Drive simulates the tone and feel of a real guitar amp, producing a much more realistic sound. In other words, with the Direct-Drive on your pedalboard, you can do a gig without carrying an amp to the club.
The design begins with a traditional ¼” guitar input and passive thru-put to feed a stage amp. This is then followed by a dedicated tuner output that is buffered in order to eliminate loading on the pickup or noise from the quartz clock. The guitar signal is then passed through a series of carefully sculpted filters to create Radial’s signature JDX tone. This is modelled after the sound of a Shure SM57™ in front of a Marshall™ 4-12 cabinet. The Direct-Drive goes further with two more voicing settings: The first adds a vintage Marshall™ tube head character to the signal path while the second delivers a tone reminiscent of an early Fender Twin™. The two amp tones can be further tailored using a presence switch for extra sparkle. The guitar signal exits the Direct-Drive via either a ¼” guitar-level output or via a balanced XLR to feed the PA. The direct box output is outfitted with a 180° polarity reverse switch to help phase-align monitors with the stage amp along with a ground lift switch to help eliminate hum and buzz caused by ground loops. The Direct-Drive may be powered using a standard 9V power supply or typical pedalboard power brick.
As with all Radial products, the Direct-Drive is made to handle the rigors of professional touring with 14-gauge steel throughout. This not only helps prevent damage to the internal PCB, it also reduces susceptibility to noise from external magnetic fields.
The Radial JDX Direct-Drive… one small step on a pedal board, one huge step for the guitarist!

Note: Note the companies mentioned above are not related to Radial and are only referenced in order to give the reader a sense of the type of tone the Direct-Drive will produce at the various voicing settings.

4 Play Multi-Output DI Box
RAD-R800 1432 00
  • Quick change-over DI for multi-instrumentalists
  • Switch between four outputs using a single footswitch
  • Four DI outputs for control over each instrument
  • Ground lift switches to eliminate hum and buzz

The 4-Play begins with a standard ¼" input for acoustic guitar, mandolin, fiddle or bass. In fact, it works great on just about any instrument. A mute footswitch lets you silence the switcher when connecting or disconnecting the instrument. The signal is then routed to a selector footswitch that sequentially activates up to four outputs allowing each instrument to have its own dedicated channel on the PA. You simply mute the 4-Play, connect the desired instrument and then use the footswitch to select the output. High visibility LED indicators provide clear visual feedback to let you know which output is active.

Radial Tech Team associate Mike Bauer explains: "When you are on a busy stage, switching instruments can pose several challenges. When sharing the same direct box, switching between an acoustic guitar and mandolin requires both the FOH engineer and monitor engineer to mute the active mixer channel in order to avoid damaging plug-in transients and painful pops for the audience. You then need to alter the EQ and adjust the level to adapt it for each instrument. Alternatively, when using separate DI boxes, you end up with a bunch of wires connected to each instrument which often get tangled. Ask any stage tech and they will tell you that the preferred approach is to use a single cable and manually switch between instruments. Then, because the artist can mute the instrument on stage, you avoid having to flag down the FOH and monitor engineers between each changeover. Since each instrument is now connected to a dedicated channel, the signal level, EQ and effects can be predetermined and optimized without having to make radical changes every time an instrument is changed.  With so many auxiliary musicians onstage these days, there has never been a more appropriate time for this type of solution."

The 4-Play features four balanced XLR outputs, each of which is equipped with a ground lift switch to help eliminate hum and buzz caused by ground loops. All of the connectors are made from glass-filled nylon for exceptional durability and isolation and feature nickel-silver contacts that will not tarnish over time. Two 'set & forget' switches allow the user to increase the range of the selector footswitch to 2, 3 or 4 outputs. There is also a dedicated tuner out that can be assigned to be always on, or function in tandem with the mute switch for quick on-the-fly adjustments.

Built Radial tough, the 4-Play is made from heavy 14-gauge steel for added rigidity and greater rejection of stray magnetic fields. It employs a standard Boss-style 9V power supply (not included) and is equipped with a cable lock to prevent accidental disconnection.

FIREFLY Tube Direct Box
RAD-R800 2020 00
* Class-A front end drives 12AX7 tube stage
* Two inputs with separate gain & remote switching
* Drag Control load correction for optimal tone
* Variable high-pass filter to eliminate resonance

The Radial Firefly™ is a high output tube direct box designed for stage and studio. It combines Radial's award winning zero negative feedback class-A front end with the warmth and character of a 12AX7 tube drive circuit and Radial's legendary transformer coupled output.
The Firefly features A and B instrument inputs with easy access level controls to accelerate instrument changes on stage. This enables the artist to switch between two different instruments and deliver a consistent signal to the PA system and on-stage amp. Switching can be done via the front panel or with the optional JR2 remote control. This connects to the Firefly using a balanced cable and adds a mute function for quiet on-stage adjustments.
To optimize performance with electric bass, the Firefly is equipped with Drag Control™ load correction that lets you adjust the load on a magnetic pickup so that it 'feels' as if connected to a tube amplifier. For 'fussy' piezo transducers, Drag can be bypassed to increase the input impedance to 4 meg-ohms to eliminate the squawk and peaks that plague these types of pickups. A fully variable high-pass filter may be dialed in to eliminate low frequency resonance that can cause feedback on stage or muddy sound when recording.
The rear panel sports two stacked ¼" instrument A & B-INPUTS and a THRU output for the on-stage amp. The THRU offers a choice of pre or post tube configuration. Additionally a TRS insert jack enables external effects to be shared between both inputs. A buffered 'always on' tuner output can be used to split the instrument signal in the studio or it can be dedicated to an electronic tuner. The tuner output can be used for silent tuning when the optional JR2 remote is connected. The balanced XLR output is equipped with a ground lift switch to help eliminate buzz and hum caused by ground loops and a 180° polarity reverse to tame feedback hot spots on stage or help phase align the PA system with the on-stage amp. The Firefly may also be rack mounted alone or in pairs by ordering the optional 19" rackmount kit.
The Firefly combines the warmth, character and feel of a vintage tube device with the low noise and performance of today's most advance audio technology.

* Combination speaker attenuator and simulator
* Safely handles up to 130 watts RMS (180 peak)
* Radial JDX Reactor and Phazer for direct recording
* Delivers great tone from your amp at low volume

The Headload is a combination load box and attenuator that is capable of handling up to 130 watts RMS of continuous power and peaks of 180 watts. Inserted between the head and cabinet, it allows the guitar amp to be driven hard while reducing the output level to reduce the sound pressure on stage or provide the means for quiet recording in the studio. This enables the artist to optimize the tone from the guitar amplifier without having to perform at ear-blistering levels.
The 100% discrete fan-cooled design begins with a series of cement encrusted, epoxy coated copper resistor coils that are controlled via a 6-position rotary switch to set the desired power reduction from 100% down to 20%. A trim control provides fine adjustment when below 20%. The Headload output can be turned off for quiet on-stage use, recording or when practicing using the built-in headphone amplifier.
In order to ensure greater consistency from gig to gig, the Headload is equipped with a Radial JDX Reactor direct box. This captures both the signal from the head plus the reactive load from the speaker cabinet for a more natural tone. The JDX has gained tremendous popularity with users as diverse as Megadeth, Aerosmith, Rascal Flatts, Sting and Radiohead. For engineers that prefer to combine a direct feed with a microphone, the Headload has also been equipped with a Radial Phazer – phase adjustment tool. This lets you time-align the JDX direct feed with the microphone to deliver incredibly natural tones, or when pushed to extreme, create over the top effects. The JDX direct output may also be tailored to suit with a 6 position voicing switch to select from various cabinet emulation presets and fine tuned using a 2-band EQ to tame overly bright amps.
Available now in 4, 8 and 16 ohms, the Headload is quite likely the most useful load box ever made.

The Radial J+4 is a stereo interface designed to accept unbalanced low output level devices such as instruments, computers or CD players and boost the signal to a balanced +4dB level for easy manipulation in professional environments such as broadcast, recording studios and live touring.
The design begins with 100% discrete components for optimal signal transfer. Careful attention has been paid to eliminate noise by combining the advantages of active signal buffering with transformer isolation. The J+4 delivers better than 95dB signal to noise while ensuring hum and buzz caused by ground loops along with spurious noise from clocking does not pollute the signal path. For ease of use, controls have been kept to a minimum. This includes a stereo level control, a high pass (low cut) filter and ground lift. The choice of input connectors include a stacked set of ¼`` jacks for DJ mixers or keyboards, RCAs for CD players and a mini 3.5mm for iPods.
As with all Radial products, the Radial J+4 is built tough to handle the extreme rigors of professional touring. A unique 14-gauge steel I-beam inner frame ensures the sensitive PC board will not be subjected to outside stress which could potentially cause solder joints to fail. An innovative book-end outer shell creates protective zones around the controls, switches and connectors to further improve dependability while a full bottom no-slip pad provides both mechanical and electrical isolation.
The Radial J+4 balanced line driver delivers exceptional sonic performance, plenty of headroom and ultra low noise making it the ideal companion for today's more demanding professional audio systems.
