The AVB Network Connection

 

PreSonus’ SW5E AVB switch supplies five AVB ports with secure. locking XLR Ethernet jacks. This, along with its robust construction, makes the SW5E an especially good choice for live sound systems. Network Link/Activity indicators help you ensure that network data is flowing properly.

 

What is an AVB network?

Audio networking is much more than just a way to connect a digital snake. With an AVB network, you can connect digital audio devices over long distances using CAT5e or CAT6 Ethernet cable and route your audio anywhere on the network with extremely low latency. AVB offers several unique benefits that make it a better choice for audio than other networking protocols. For example, AVB provides a high-precision clock that significantly reduces harmonic distortion and phasing, ensuring your audio stays clear and clean. AVB ensures you always have enough bandwidth to carry your low latency audio—even when your intern starts streaming a movie. These important benefits are an inherent part of AVB; you don’t need to do anything special to your devices or AVB switch. And you can only get them with AVB.

 

PoE: Remote power for networked devices.

Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a technology that enables network cables to carry electrical power to compatible devices. With PoE, a single cable delivers both network data, such as digital audio, and electrical power. You can locate a PoE-enabled device anywhere you can run an Ethernet cable because you don’t need a local power source. Four of the SW5E’s five ports can provide PoE, a rare feature in the current generation of AVB switches. The SW5E’s fifth port is non-PoE, which is useful for linking to additional switches to create a larger network.

 

Tough enough for live sound.

Live sound gigs are hard on gear, and if your network fails, the show could be over. That’s why the SW5E is built to stand up to the rigors of live sound and perform reliably every time. In addition to using rugged, locking XLR Ethernet connectors, the SW5E is housed in a heavy-duty, all-metal chassis and can be rack mounted using a rack tray (not included). The unit also employs an internal power supply with standard IEC connector—not a clumsy “wall wart” supply that could easily get bumped loose.

 

A great networking solution for StudioLive digital mixers.

When used with StudioLive digital mixers, an SW5E AVB switch makes many wonderful things possible. Use an SW5E to network StudioLive Series III consoles or to connect a StudioLive AI-series console and StudioLive RML-series rack mixer (as a stage box). Put an SW5E at the center of your network to connect a StudioLive RML-series rack mixer with a StudioLive CS18AI control surface. You can even cascade two StudioLive RML-series mixers to create a larger system by AVB networking them with an SW5E.

You also can use the SW5E to connect non-PreSonus AVB-enabled equipment. As long as the product is compatible with the AVB specification, it is compatible with the SW5E.

One endpoint, two networks

Whether you’re looking at your Dante network setup from Audinate’s Dante Control software or managing your StudioLive Series III AVB ecosystem from UC Surface or a StudioLive Series III console touchscreen, the AVB-D16 presents itself as a simple 16x16 network device. This lets you easily patch up to 16 audio sources on your StudioLive Series III mixers or NSB-series stage boxes to any available input on your Dante network and receive 16 channels of audio from your Dante network to route to your StudioLive Series III mixers, EarMix 16M personal monitor mixers, or the outputs on your NSB-series stage boxes, creating a truly cohesive networking experience between the two protocols.

One endpoint, two sample rates

With built-in Asynchronous Sample Rate Conversion, the AVB-D16 provides precision clock isolation between the AVB and Dante networks. This ensures pristine, clear audio with no dropouts or artifacts. It also allows you to run different sample rates on the AVB and Dante networks. So even if you're operating a Dante network at 96kHz, you can still connect streams between your StudioLive Series III AVB network operating at 48kHz with total confidence that the audio will be clean and error free.

The PreSonus® NSB 32.16 networked stage box lets you put analog I/O for your StudioLive® Series III digital mixer wherever you need it. Equipped with 32 digitally controlled XMAX mic preamps, 32 balanced line level inputs, 16 analog outputs, and 2 stereo AES3 digital outputs, the NSB 32.16 integrates seamlessly into StudioLive Series III digital mixers with a single Ethernet connection. Remotely control input trim, phantom power, and more, directly from your StudioLive Series III console or UC Surface remote mixing software on your tablet or laptop.

Powerful connectivity that’s designed to be shared.
The NSB 32.16 networked stage box is loaded with 32 versatile locking combo jacks. Connect your microphones to the digitally controlled XMAX preamps or use the balanced ¼” TRS inputs to connect your line level devices — the NSB 32.16 can handle it all. The inputs can be sent to any StudioLive Series III digital mixer on the network, and thanks to gain compensation, every mixer gets individual gain control without affecting the front-of-house mix. An NSB-series stage box can provide inputs for more than one StudioLive Series III digital mixer on an AVB network. You can send audio from the stage to the front-of-house mixer, the mixer at monitor position, the mixer in the broadcast booth, and more, all from the same NSB 32.16 on stage. Because control of the NSB 32.16 preamps is handled remotely, a single mixer must be given master control over NSB 32.16 preamp levels and phantom power.

With some networked systems, every mixer on the network must share the same preamp level. Not so with the StudioLive Series III ecosystem: NSB-series stage boxes have onboard DSP that provides gain compensation on every input that allows every mixer on the network to make gain adjustments relative to the level set on the master mixer. In this way, every mixer can adjust the preamp level locally for optimal gain staging.

Rugged stage box, flexible installation.

PreSonus built the NSB 32.16 inside a rugged steel chassis designed to survive the rigors of the most demanding tours. The NSB 32.16 features adjustable rack ears, so you can choose between flush or recessed as well as front or rear I/O installation to best fit your rack. Thanks to the standard 3U 19-inch design, the NSB 32.16 is also compatible with most universal stage pockets for permanent installations.

A complete networked solution.

StudioLive Series III networked products form an ecosystem that is easily expanded and quickly configured. Designed to enhance each other, these products are at the forefront of AVB networking technology. The NSB 32.16 can be used alone or with many other NSB-series stage boxes to add remote audio to one StudioLive Series III digital mixer or to multiple mixers on the same network. For StudioLive Series III mixers that have limited onboard analog I/O, the NSB 32.16 provides a simple expansion to a full 32- or 64-channel mixing system.

A professional measurement tool.

The PRM1 Precision Reference Microphone is a special type of microphone that provides an accurate reproduction of a room's sound characteristics for use with audio-analysis tools. It employs a ¼”, pre-polarized electret-condenser capsule with an omnidirectional polar pattern, which allows the microphone to measure reflections, as well as direct signals up to 132 dB SPL. The PRM1 has an all-metal chassis and comes with a clip, foam windscreen, and hard case.

 

What makes the PRM1 different from most mics?

Unlike mics you use for recording and live sound, the PRM1 has a narrow dynamic range, since it is intended to receive test frequencies, such as pink noise, at a fixed level. As a result, it is not recommended for recording or performance—but it’s the right mic for tuning a sound system to perform accurately in a venue. The PRM1 exhibits linear (“flat”) frequency response between 20 Hz and 20 kHz, meaning it captures all frequencies equally within that range. Since it neither boosts nor cuts frequencies, it doesn’t color the sound, making it ideal for measuring what a room or speaker is doing to a sound system’s outgoing signal.

 

Designed for use with Smaart and other audio analysis tools.

While the PRM1 can be used for a variety of measurement applications, such as MLSSA™, Spectrafoo™, and TEF™, it is especially recommended for use with the Smaart® System Check wizards that are integrated into PreSonus® UC Surface control software for StudioLive® AI and StudioLive RM mixers. With this combination, you can have a complete, powerful, and affordable, audio-analysis and correction system.
